SEALANTS

Sealants

Sealants are a highly effective method of reducing cavities on the chewing surface of teeth. We may recommend sealants for young patients who consume more sweet foods and drinks than is desirable and who might not brush as long and as often as they should. Research focusing on the effects of sealants has shown that they can reduce the incidence of cavities as much as 80%.

Sealants form a physical barrier on the chewing surfaces of the teeth to protect them from the damaging effects of plaque and bacteria.

The material used for sealants is a durable, long-lasting plastic that is simply painted on the chewing surface of the teeth. This remarkable layer of protection can help a patient avoid cavities for years. If you have received sealants, we will check them at each visit to ensure they are not wearing away or chipping. Many insurance companies will cover sealants for patients younger than 18.
