DENTAL BONDING

Dental Bonding

Dental bonding is an incredibly useful and versatile way to improve or repair a smile. The material used for dental bonding is tough and durable resin that can be colored to match a patient’s natural teeth. A dentist’s experienced hand applies this resin to one or more teeth, and then shapes and polishes it until a patient’s smile has been brightened or repaired.

Applications for Dental Bonding

  • Making the length of teeth more even and regular
  • Correcting one or more irregularly shaped teeth
  • Covering a discolored, damaged tooth
  • Eliminating gaps between teeth
  • Repairing chipped teeth
  • Covering exposed roots
  • Lengthening teeth for cosmetic reasons
Before and after images of dental bonding show how thoroughly this technique can repair or improve a patient’s smile. Bonding is a fast and relatively inexpensive way of correcting a problem smile.

The Dental Bonding Procedure

First, the surface of the tooth is roughened to allow the resin to adhere tightly to the tooth. Then a conditioning agent is applied. The resin will be mixed and colored to match the patient’s other teeth.

The resin will then be applied to the tooth or teeth. A discolored tooth will be covered with a thin coat of resin. Gaps between two teeth or a chip in a tooth will be filled in. One tooth or several teeth can be reshaped in this way.

Next, the resin is smoothed and then it is quickly hardened using a special, colored light or laser. After hardening, the resin is polished until it is a perfect match for other teeth.

A repair like this is a painless procedure. The resin is stain-resistant, but dark-colored drinks should be avoided for the first few days. Care should be taken to avoid biting on objects like pens or ice to ensure that dental bonding will last for many years.
